Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Union Congregational Church
United Church of Christ
An Open and Affirming, Earthwise,
Progressive Christian Congregation
Elk River, Minnesota 763-441-1203
Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ welcomes everyone, no matter who you are or where you are on your faith journey. Large print bulletins, handheld listening devices, children’s activity bags and crayons can be found in the back of the sanctuary.
We welcome children and families to sit anywhere they are comfortable in the sanctuary or the vestry area off to the left of the organ. The vestry area provides a place where children can stretch out a bit if that is more comfortable for families with little ones. We encourage parents and other adults sitting near children to help children follow along with the bulletin or hymnal.
Guests are invited to sign the guest book and sign up for our newsletter Other information about our church and the United Church of Christ denomination is available in the Narthex.
God has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8, (NIV))
Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ Mission Statement
God calls us to minister to each other. This ministry goes beyond our congregation into the community, wider world, and to the earth itself. We seek to reach those in the margins of society, to empower the powerless, and to leave this earth a better place than when we each arrived.
WORDS OF CENTERING
Anyone can count the number of seeds in an apple, but only God can count the number of apples in a seed. Robert H. Shuller

CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP #742 “Gathered Here”
Gathered here in the mystery of this hour,
Gathered here in one strong body
Gathered here in the struggle and the power
Spirit draw near.
CALL TO WORSHIP (please join in call and response)
One: We gather together in the presence of our marvelous Creator.
Many: May the Spirit enable us.
One: To speak with the Holy and with one another in honesty and ways that connect.
Many: To sing with voices united in praise.
One: To listen with alertness for the good news.
Many: To give with whole hearts and open hands.
One: May we worship God in speech and song, in word and deed, and may the sharing of our worship be the daring of our faith.
HYMN #283 “Spirit of the Living God”
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (let us pray together)
Author of our lives, we confess that we often fall short of your intentions for us and of our expectations for ourselves. We want to experience the world as goodness, but often recognize only the negativity. We want to live with integrity and stand for truth, but we are torn with uncertainties. We want to warm the lives of others with our love, but we hesitate, wondering if they will love us in return. We want to go about our daily lives with confidence and joy, but find ourselves struggling with self- doubt. We need your presence, Holy One, if we are to be all that we could and want to be. Let our worship heal us, renew us, and strengthen us, that we may go forth with joy and peace. Amen.
WORDS OF ASSURANCE (hear these words)
Our confession is an acknowledgement of our humanness and our need for God’s grace. God promises over and over to forgive us, and empowers us to begin again. We accept this assurance with humility and with the hope that it will lead us toward new life.
LIGHTING OF THE PEACE CANDLE/THE PEACE PRAYER
*GREETING OF PEACE
In the same spirit in which we receive the unconditional love of God in Jesus Christ, let us offer to one another our own sign of peace.
One: The Peace of Christ be with you.
Many: And also with you.
TIME WITH CHILDREN
SCRIPTURE READING Mark 4: 26-34
HYMN #528 “Sois la Semilla (You Are the Seed)”
OUR TIME OF SHARING JOYS & CONCERNS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & PRAYERS OF THE COMMUNITY
Please stand to share your joys and concerns. Using the handheld microphone is appreciated by those with hearing loss and by those who are taking notes. Please say your name for the benefit of all, especially new members and guests. Follow your prayer with the words “O God”, to which we will all respond, “Hear our prayer.”
THE PRAYER THAT JESUS TAUGHT (let us pray together)
Our Creator in Heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
INVITATION TO GIVE/RECEIVING OUR GIFTS
PRAYER OF DEDICATION (let us pray together)
Holy One, we look around in wonder at all you have made and offer our gifts thankfully and hopefully. We commit ourselves to move beyond safe places into the riskier territory to which you call us. May your Spirit guide us and may our giving bring your compassion and justice to all the world. Amen.
