SUNDAY'S COOL TALKING POINTS

Sunday, January 4, 2017

Our Sunday's Cool kids made stewardship boxes in November.  The kids put money into the boxes during the week at home (even if they can't be at church that week).   Then, during Sunday's Cool, they can combine their gifts for the church.  We'll be doing this weekly at the start of Sunday's Cool.  Ask your kids about the small box they decorated (or would like to decorate).   Put it in a prominent place at home.  Make a ritual out of putting money in the box and taking it out to bring on Sunday.

This week the Sunday's Cool classes talked about Mary (the mother of Jesus) as a child. The bible itself says very little about Mary, mostly around the birth of Jesus.

  • What does your family know about you as a child?

  • What was your favorite Christmas gift?

  • Did you have your own room?

  • What pets did you have or want?

  • What made you afraid?

  • What comforted you?

Share your stories with each other!

In Sunday’s Cool we celebrated All Saints Day, All Souls Day and Día de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead.

All Saint’s Day lifts up people recognized by the church as saints.

Can you think of any saints you’ve heard of?  How about Saint Patrick?  Who else?

All Souls Day is another version that lifts up the names of our loved ones who are no longer with us, sometimes lighting candles or the ringing of a bell when their name is spoken in church.

Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead is a tradition of celebrating (partying) in a happy remembrance of our loved ones.

Think of loved ones (critters too) who are no longer with you.  What were their favorite things, favorite foods, favorite activities etc.?   Tell each other a funny/happy story about them.

Isaiah talks about God singing a sad love song for a vineyard of sour grapes.  Our God is a God of unconditional love and second chances.  God can even help turn sour grapes into sweet jelly, candied grapes, grape juice and more…

Talking-points

  • When are we sour grapes?

  • When are we sweet grapes?

  • How can we share unconditional love like God, even when we feel like someone is being a sour grape?

Sunday, October 1, 2017 - World Communion Sunday

Talking-points

  • Why did Jesus use bread and wine at the Passover meal he shared with his friends?

  • What different food and drink would you choose to share with your friends?

  • Sometimes during communion, we hear the words, "when you join in this meal, you become part of the body of Christ in the world." What do you think that means?

This week's scripture was about the workers in the vineyard, Matthew 20:1-16.

Talking-points

  • Why did some of the workers think they'd been treated unfairly?

  • Have you ever felt like something was unfair?

  • How is the owner of the vineyard like God?

The scripture excerpt that the kids were encouraged to memorize is Matthew 20:16 - "The last shall be first."
